Australia Day Market 2012

I had a great day at the market at Bicentennial Square Bunbury on Australia Day yesterday. With the forecasted heat wave (41ºC!) and having to set up from 10-11am, I was a bit nervous in the lead up to the market.

While setting up (next door to the Tourist Information Centre), Dame Edna came by to assist me in promoting my stall…

Dame Edna came to visit my market stallOn the table I had a few bags of Rockin Green Laundry Detergent, various wetbags on special, cloth wipes and packs of inserts.

The blue lacy throw was crocheted in the summer of 2006, and the crochet bowl for the wipes was made a couple of months ago.

ecoBumba nappies were pegged up like bunting, and more ecoBumba nappies were displayed on hangers, though next time I would also include the inserts on the hanger somehow.

Samples and business cards on this table.I also brought along the three nappies that will be up for sale at WAHM Delights: the brown giraffe twin ecoBumba nappy set and the brightly coloured Blue Sunset Waves ecoBumba nappy. Only managed a side view though.

The three WAHM Delights nappies to be sold on Sunday 29 Jan 2012 There was a good response to the nappies, particularly the cute little giraffe.

The market started at 1pm, with mainly tourists and day-trippers browsing the market stalls. At about 6pm the day cooled off, and the crowds descended, in preparation for the fireworks show at 8.30pm. I think there were more people visiting the stall in the last 3 hours than the first 4-5 hours, no thanks to the heat.

I had a better view this year of the Fireworks compared to the Australia Day markets I did in the past two years. No trees or neighbouring stalls to block the view!

Fireworks starFireworks FinaleThank you to all who came past, especially previous clients (you know who you are :) ). It  was also great to meet several like-minded clothie mums who knew modern cloth, I’m looking forward to meeting up with you again soon.

Thanks also goes to my 10+ friends who rocked up after the fireworks ended, and helped me to pack up in record time.

Stay tuned for an ex-demo nappy sale by random.org comments on this blog!

This nappy worked very hard to educate the masses about modern cloth nappies on Australia Day, and needs a new home. Sale by random.org sometime this weekend or early next week, details and photos to come.

ecoBumba new pocket opening

Back in late 2009, I received an order for a minkee nappy in the Bubba J pocket nappy pattern. It fit the intended bubba very well, except that the double elastic pocket opening tended to gape and the insert could sometimes be exposed. I find this is a problem more so in minkee nappies due to the bulk of the minkee not allowing the back elastic to recoil as much.

I took this mumma’s comment about pocket opening on board and soon found myself experimenting with different pocket opening styles.

It took me about a year on and off to find a suitable method to tweak this pocket opening. Finally I looked up and used a welt pocket in my trusty sewing reference book, but it was still not quite it.

Enter the modified welt pocket.

It looks pretty much like a single lip welt pocket, but with a flap inside the opening to help hold the insert within the nappy.

I wanted a pocket opening that

- held in the pocket insert at the back
- looked neater than a double elastic opening
- had the potential to convert the nappy into an AI2 (more on this later)
- was wider for bigger hands to stuff and unstuff the nappy
- I didn’t really like the idea of a front pocket opening with a baby boy.

This modified welt pocket opening makes it easier for big hands to stuff/unstuff the nappy

This pocket ticks all the points and is perfect, I feel the love!

Remember this nappy?

This was one of the first nappies I made since coming out of maternity leave in mid-2010, for my little sunny boy. I tested the new pocket opening on this nappy and loved the neat fit of the single back elastic and the BIG pocket opening unrestricted by elastic like the previous version.

Construction-wise, it has added a bit of sewing time, but the results are worth it.

Overall fit is similar to the original pocket opening version.

They are available right now for $30* each (launch special* – usually $31-34 each), including two long inserts that give 10-12 layers of super thirsty bamboo absorbancy for day or night.
