And the winner is…

…found at the bottom of this post! :)

Thank you all so much for contributing to the discussion on cloth wipes. After reading all your comments and suggestions, I had to go back and use the cloth wipes again intentionally, paying more attention to the grabbiness/polish-y-ness of the cotton flannellette, cotton sherpa and the bamboo velour.

I never paid too much attention to how grabby the different materials were. Coming from exclusively using commercial wipes, any cloth wipe made with any absorbent fabric seems so much easier to clean up with comparatively.

I used these two:

School of Fish 2 and Cotton Sherpa cloth wipes

Comparison Wipe #1: School of Fish 2 with cotton velour backing

Blue Ooga Booga on bamboo velour

Comparison Wipe #2: Blue Ooga Booga on bamboo velour

I did find:
- cotton sherpa was slightly grabbier than bamboo velour, while bamboo velour was more grabby than flannellette. This was compared on runny rather than solid sticky poo (sorry if too-much-information!). So yes, to those commenters (Thanks Monica, Caressa, Andrea and Monica) who mentioned it, thank you for that insightful tidbit!

- Both did a great job on runny poo. Just one wipe moistened with water and wringed out cleaned up all the mess.

- True to form, the cotton sherpa required more sprayer action to wash off the poo into the loo, while poo slipped out of the velour fibres easily when rinsing it out with the nappy sprayer.

- The bamboo velour washed up quite soft in the machine, while the cotton sherpa felt not-as-soft, but still softer than cotton terry towelling nappies.

I need to pay more attention again when using them on more normal 1-year-old messes. My little tester has had some interesting motions this month with illness and teething, and then the change to warmer weather (not enough fluids!). He also prefers to deposit them straight in the loo (we practice part-time Elimination Communication) so I actually have little opportunity to try them.

Ok on to the giveaway…

The winning comment (minus my comment) is:random.org image of cloth wipes giveaway: number 12

Overlooked edges are better as no poo will get stuck in the seem folds.
Rounded corners have a nicer look to them.
The size is great especially because they fit in the reusable tubs, big plus.
Having only used face washers as reusable wipes, something a bit more absorbent would be great. Keen as mustard to try the combinations of fabric you have put together.
If I was to win I would like neutral or slightly boyish ones.

Congratulations Brooke! Please contact me with your name and address, and I will send you your prize.

And thank you all so much for your feedback!
All of your feedback has been extremely valuable as I continue to improve my product. In the spirit of Christmas I would love to send 1 cloth wipe to each of you.

Please contact me with your name, address, and the clothwasher you prefer.

Stay tuned for more discussions and giveaways after the Christmas break, maybe before if I get a chance :)

GIVEAWAY: Cloth wipes – feedback wanted!

Here’s a chance to win a pack of 5 cloth wipes! Simply read through to the end for conditions of this giveaway. Giveaway has closed, random.org drawing will be done late 1 December so stay tuned :)

I’ve just loaded up some cloth washers that I made over the last month or so.
The current batch I rounded the corners and overlocked the edges.

One of the cloth washers I made - Let it Snow flannelette with luscious bamboo velour backing.

They ended up measuring slightly less than 20x20cm, so they would fit into an empty commercial wipes container.

There were fishes and ships,

Pale blue minky top and Bamboo velour cloth wipesI even made Ooga Booga wipes out of some Ooga Booga flannelette I have handy.

Blue Ooga Booga on bamboo velourAll of the materials have been washed in hot hot water and dried on hot, I’m confident there will be no more shrinking when in use.

The prewashed bamboo velour, while very melt-in-your-hand, ran out on me while making this batch. While prewashing another batch of bamboo velour, I cut up some matching soft dark pink cotton sherpa and continued making cloth washers.

They are very easy to use.
Simply wet, wipe and dry pail with your nappies.
How easy is that? No more separating commercial wipes from your cloth nappies even when out!

Now, on to the current Giveaway:

The winner will receive a mixed patterned pack of 5 cloth washers from the range (including 1 cotton sherpa wipe) worth approximately $10-$12. Please state if you want a mainly girly pack, a mainly boyish pack, a unisex pack or an ‘anything goes’ pack.

Reply to the questions below by submitting a comment, and I will random.org a winner some time on 30 November 2011 (or get one of my children to pick out of a hat or something).

What do you like to see in a cloth wipe?

- overlocked (as pictured) or turned and top-stitched (raw edges sewn in)?
- rounded corners (as pictured) or square corners?
- size: 20cm x 20cm is just right, or make it bigger or smaller?
- any other preferences?

Of course, if you want first dibs on any of these cloth wipes, you can go shopping for them via this link: Cloth Washers by ecoBumba

I look forward to hearing your feedback!

The inner lining of the prize nappy is white microsuede.

Bubba J pocket nappies were one of the first hip-snapping pocket nappies available in Australia. It was designed in 2005-2006, featuring polyester PUL in pastels and bright prints.
It is one of my personal favourite nappies for leakproofness and pooplosion resistance :)

Features and benefits include:

  • PUL laminated Polyester outer: for waterproofness with breathability, and a stylish and colourful print on the outside without any fear of moisture wicking (like in nappies with cotton outers).
  • Microsuede lining: Keeps baby dry by wicking moisture through to the inner absorbant core.
  • One 2-layered bamboo trifold insert and one 3-layered microfibre booster included: Use both inserts for day or night, or purchase extra trifolds for heavy wetting night use. All inserts unfold for a thorough wash and quick drying ability.
  • Hip-snapping: waist and thigh fit can be set separately, ensuring a good fit for no leaks.
  • Elasticated in the front: to ensure good fit around the waist
  • Generous pocket: provides extra room within the pocket for extra boosting without compromising fit around the waist.

Tested to fit bubs from 3.5kg (small size) up to about 15-16kg (large size), depending on your baby’s built. You may like read more about Bubba J and see fabric choices (see ‘Photos’), or have a look at what testers had to say.

Those new to modern cloth often start off their journey into cloth nappies with a simple All-in-one (AIO) nappy, where all the waterproofing and absorbancy is sewn into the nappy. There’s no need to fiddle around with inserts or snapping bits into the nappy.

To make it easier to use cloth nappies, Bean Sprout Bubba has a range of nappy accessories in stock to help you use cloth when out and about, or when removing waste from nappies.

Focus product: Rockin’ Green Detergent

One of these accessory products will help you combat the stinkies in the laundry — Rockin’ Green Detergent!
Rockin’ Green Detergent is a laundry washing powder specially formulated for modern cloth nappy laundry.
Unlike conventional laundry detergent, this detergent is designed to wash out of nappy fibres without leaving any residue, carrying along stinky smelly molecules away from your beloved nappies.
Some mums swear by a once a month ‘Rockin’ a Soak’ strip wash with Rockin’ Green Detergent to freshen up their nappies. Others simply use it in place of their normal detergent when washing nappies.

At Bean Sprout Bubba we have a special Rockin’ Green offer: buy 2 big bags of the same scent and formula, and get $1.95 off (per 2-bag pair).

For more information about how to use cloth nappies, simply hover your mouse pointer over ‘Nappy 101′ at the top of this blog page.
