ecoBumba new pocket opening

Back in late 2009, I received an order for a minkee nappy in the Bubba J pocket nappy pattern. It fit the intended bubba very well, except that the double elastic pocket opening tended to gape and the insert could sometimes be exposed. I find this is a problem more so in minkee nappies due to the bulk of the minkee not allowing the back elastic to recoil as much.

I took this mumma’s comment about pocket opening on board and soon found myself experimenting with different pocket opening styles.

It took me about a year on and off to find a suitable method to tweak this pocket opening. Finally I looked up and used a welt pocket in my trusty sewing reference book, but it was still not quite it.

Enter the modified welt pocket.

ecoBumba new pocket opening - welt pocket

It looks pretty much like a single lip welt pocket, but with a flap inside the opening to help hold the insert within the nappy.

I wanted a pocket opening that

- held in the pocket insert at the back
- looked neater than a double elastic opening
- had the potential to convert the nappy into an AI2 (more on this later)
- was wider for bigger hands to stuff and unstuff the nappy
- I didn’t really like the idea of a front pocket opening with a baby boy.

This modified welt pocket opening makes it easier for big hands to stuff/unstuff the nappy

This pocket ticks all the points and is perfect, I feel the love!

Remember this nappy?

This was one of the first nappies I made since coming out of maternity leave in mid-2010, for my little sunny boy. I tested the new pocket opening on this nappy and loved the neat fit of the single back elastic and the BIG pocket opening unrestricted by elastic like the previous version.

Construction-wise, it has added a bit of sewing time, but the results are worth it.

Overall fit is similar to the original pocket opening version.

They are available right now for $30* each (launch special* – usually $31-34 each), including two long inserts that give 10-12 layers of super thirsty bamboo absorbancy for day or night.

I will be taking some of these nappies to the Australia Day market in Bunbury tomorrow, if you’re local and wish to see them in real life, please drop by between 1-9pm (though I will be set up quite a bit earlier).

Dinosaurus!

I had this super cute dinosaur fabric hoarded for about a year now, and finally whipped something up from it in early December. Paired with brown minky, the effect is too cute.

Dino Cotton Panel ecoBumba nappyI’ve never done cotton panel nappies before. Using cotton on the outside of a brown minky nappy made me nervous (flashback to customers finding leaks when I did cotton outer nappies when I first started!), but the effect is cute enough that I would consider making more.

Front of Dino Cotton Panel ecoBumba nappyI find I need time and practice to get into the groove of making something new. I’m never comfortable with asking for money for a new technique I simply picked up in 1-2 hours, unless it turned out perfect! ;)

As it were, I had some practice runs with another different nappy cut (to be revealed in due time), before making up this dino nappy. This nappy was almost perfect, but for the fact that the dinos were blind! Now I know what to do next time.

See why I called this the 'Blind Dino' nappy? :)

Sorry about the camera angle, the panel looks like it’s sewn on crooked but I can assure you it was straight in real life! :)

After hanging on to it for a few weeks, debating whether to keep this one or make another for my Little C-boy, the nappy was claimed by its new owner in Perth.

Cushie Tushies review: it’s all about the fit

picture of all in one one size modern cloth nappies by cushie tushies

Part of Calvin's Cushie Tushies nappy stash

These all-in-one one-size Cushie Tushies nappies were a latecomer to my nappy stash and to the store at Bean Sprout Bubba. These nappies have an outer layer of cute fashionable minky and an inner lining of microfleece.

I initially bought these for Bri when she was about 18 months old, by which time I had ample nappies and just needed to try these.

But they did not fit my daughter’s petite shape very well.
She has a difficult to fit body shape: Her skinny tummy and legs meant that while the nappy fit well around her waist, there was too much gaping around the thighs. Note: This happened with medium itti bitti nappies as well, though in hindsight she would’ve fit small itti bitti nappies, but back to the point.

Disappointed, I put them away in a box to be resold.

Ever knowing that different babies fit different brands differently, I started to stock them at Bean Sprout Bubba even after this episode, due to popular demand.

Fast forward 6 months, Calvin is born. After a month, I find him outgrowing his small nappies.
One day I ran out of small/medium nappies and decide to prep some new ones, and decided to take the Cushie Tushies out of storage while waiting for the new nappies to dry.

Due to his newbornness I removed the snap in insert and laid it in the nappy, folded down the front and put it on. Not a good fit: his big waist relative to his little skinny thighs just did not fit it well.
Waist was too tight, thighs were too loose.

Then seemingly overnight he turned into a little Michelin Man, with chubby munchable thighs.
He didn’t need the front folded down anymore so I tried again around the 2-month-old mark.

SUCCESS!!!

The nappies were (and still are) a perfect fit!

His body shape of average waist + largish thighs proved to be the winning combination, unlike petite little Bri.
Fit around the waist and thighs was just right.

See how well it fits?

They also were very effective in keeping all messes in, no leaks with the included lay-in booster and snap-in booster.

Suffice to say these are nappies I reach for first nowadays. It will be interesting to see how the fit changes (if at all) as Calvin grows.

VERDICT
- fits babies with bigger thigh/small to average waist ratios
- does not fit petite older babies very well when front is unfolded
- fairly good absorbency if nappy fits
- leakage if nappy does not fit

Note: this is a quickie review based on my own real-life experiences focusing on the fit of the nappy, the most important element in choosing a suitable nappy for your baby.I do sell these, but this does not change my assessment of the nappy.
