It's as easy as storing used nappies in a dry pail, washing in the washing machine and then hanging them out to dry! :)

Just remember these tips:

      1. Wash wool covers separately from the rest of the nappies.

      2. Soaking is not necessary. Just remove solid matter into the toilet, then chuck the nappy into a dry pail or a basket until you wash them. Leave them no longer than 1-2 days.
      3. I recommend separating inserts from pocket shells, and snap in boosters from AI2 shells, so that the whole nappy is cleaned and dried thorouhgly before being reused.

      4. On wash day, do a pre-rinse cycle first in cold water to remove excess wee, then wash on warm using the longest rinse cycle on your machine.

      5. Use 1/3 to 1/2 the recommended dosage of detergent to reduce detergent build up in the nappies that can cause smells and rashes.

      6. Choose a detergent that has no enzymes, no softeners, no bleach and no other additives. These ingredients may shorten the life of the fabric and elastic used in the nappies.

      7. Do not use fabric softener! By coating the fibres of cotton, hemp or bamboo, it reduces the fabrics' natural absorbancy. It also coats the stay-dry microfleece/microsuede lining and causes repelling of fluids, reducing the wicking effect of the fabric.
      8. Line dry or use a low tumble dryer occasionally. Drying under sunlight has the added bonus of killing germs and naturally bleaching out stains.

On odd occasions when the smell of wee is particularly strong, or when baby is teething, I would hand rinse the nappy in water (right after changing) and gently squeeze out before storing in a dry pail.

Q. How do I wash my wool covers? How often should I do it?

Handwashing followed by lanolising is the recommended method, if you use the washing machine the wool cover may shrink*.

Don't be afraid of lanolising, it is really easy and wool works so well after that.

Wash them when they start to get a bit whiffy, or after about 2-4weeks (depending on how frequently you use them).

Watch the following video, or follow the written instructions below:

Here's how to wash and lanolise wool covers:

  1. Fill a shallow basin with warm water, not too hot. Dilute a little (probably about 1 teaspoon to 9 l) gentle wool wash or baby shampoo into the water.
  2. Place your wool cover into the water and gently squeeze the soapy water into the cover.
  3. Let the cover soak in the water for about half an hour.
  4. Pour out the soapy water and gently squeeze out excess liquid (do not wring), then rinse by soaking in plain water and gently squeezing out the excess liquid again until the water runs clear.
  5. Empty the basin and remove the wool cover. FIll basin with hot water.
  6. Take a pea-sized blob of lanolin and melt it in the hot water**. Some people like to add a tiny bit of baby shampoo into the water to help the lanolin disperse a bit more.
  7. Add some cool water to lower the water temperature to warm.
  8. Immerse the cover in the basin of lanolin water, this time for half an hour, up to several hours.
  9. After soaking, remove the wool cover and gently squeeze out the liquid. Roll the cover in a dry towel to remove excess liquid and lay flat to dry.

Notes:

*This may actually be a good thing as they are so generously sized, that they could take a bit of shrinking in the machine to further thicken the wool layers to make a BULLETPROOF night cover!

However be warned that you do this at your own risk and responsibility.

**Melt lanolin by:

(A) Put the lanolin blob in a small jar, fill with boiling water and shake (with oven mitts!)

(B) Place lanolin blob in empty wash basin, fil with hot tap water then use your hand ot help diisperse lanolin (shown in video)

(C) Place blob of lanolin in a bowl, add water and microwave on high until lanolin has dissolved.

Care & washing instructions

Do I need to soak?

Modern cloth nappies are easy because they don’t require bleaching, soaking, hot washing, ironing; or any of those mundane and time consuming jobs that make traditional cloth nappies seem like a chore.

Once used, simply empty the contents of the soiled nappy into the toilet (or you can use a bio-degradable flushable liner for this if you don’t like the mess) and throw the nappy in a dry nappy bucket with a lid, or straight in the wash. Do not soak as doing so will only spread bacteria.

For stubborn stains or potent wees, it is a good idea to rinse and ring out the nappy after use, before storing in the bucket ready for washing.

How do I wash them?

Wash wet and soiled nappies promptly – we recommend washing within 24 hours of use, to prevent the urine from corroding the fabrics and stains and odors from developing.

Gentle machine wash in cold or warm water. We recommend cold to 40ºC, but not hotter than 60°C maximum as the heat will degrade the bamboo fabric over time.

Cushie Tushies do not need sterilizing. Do not use bleach or nappisan, it is not necessary and can damage the waterproof lining. For best washing results, choose either a pre-wash (or rinse) then wash cycle (no soaking!).

Cold or warm washing and drying your nappies on the line or in a warm dryer, will kill any germs. In addition, the bamboo fabric has its own natural antibacterial properties that will help keep the nappy from going moldy.

Do not use fabric softener as this will damage the waterproof lining as well as decrease the absorbency of the bamboo fabric.

What about drying?

Dry immediately after washing. We advise line drying as often as possible. To reduce the strain on the bamboo fabric and the elastic, remove the boosters and hang separately. Hang your nappies and boosters directly over the middle so there is an equal weight hanging on each side of the line. Drying with the bamboo side facing up to the sun is faster.

Using an electric dryer sometimes is ok. Use a warm setting only (not hot) to prevent the bamboo from shrinking or the waterproof lining to blister.

Ensure nappies are very dry and before re-using. If the bamboo fabric is cool to touch, it is not dry. Nappies that are not fully dry before use will not be as absorbent and may leak.

What detergent should I use?

Wash with a regular washing detergent – liquid or powder. Use only the amount of detergent as instructed; using extra may build up in the fabrics and reduce absorbency.

Cushie Tushies prefer eco friendly detergents such as Seventh Generation and Enviro Clean. As above, we advise against the use of chlorine/non-chlorine bleaches and fabric softener.
