Why Use Cloth?

Because it saves money and is more effective.

1. Cheaper than disposable nappies.

You'll find most parents spend around $30-40 on a pack of disposable nappies that will last about 1 week-10 days.

Assuming you spend $25 per week, in one year you will be spending $1300 on nappies.

As the average child toilet trains between 2-3 years old, this means $2600-$3900 will be literally thrown in the bin over this time!

And this does not include the cost of wipes and nappy rash creams, nor the countless laundry from all the leakage in some disposables!

A full-time modern cloth nappy package costs around $300-1000 depending on the needs of the child and how frequently you wish to wash them.

The nappies should last the child from birth to toddlerhood, if you look after them well, you could even use them on your subsequent child.

2. Easier to use and wash compared to traditional cloth nappies.

No soaking - modern washing machines are very efficient at cleaning, and drying in the sun removes stains and kills germs.

No pins - modern nappies use closures like snappies, velcro and snaps to fasten on, and can be just as easy as disposable nappies to put on.

No need to learn how to fold them - modern nappies are shaped and easy to boost absorbancy where it is required.

Super absorbent - modern cloth nappies use modern fabrics such as hemp, bamboo or microfibre, several times more absorbant compared to traditional cotton terry or flanellette squares.

Baby stays dry - Some modern cloth nappies have a stay-dry fabric sewn in to keep babies bottom dry, and makes clean up easier too.

3. More effective - it works everytime.

I don't know about you, but I find that disposable nappies can leak past the leg and waist openings, no matter how well you fasten them on with no gaps.

Especially up the back with mustardy poo in very young babies.

Modern cloth nappies do not leak if put on properly.

If baby tends to wet more, just add a booster to increase the nappy's absorptive capacity.

Modern fabrics used in cloth nappies are very absorbent and breathable, so baby does not get a hot red bottom.

Young babies benefit from a fitted nappy and cover system (two barriers against poo leaks), while older babies have no problem with a simpler pocket nappy (one-piece system).

4. A hygienic option that smells less.

If you think cloth nappies are stinky and unhygienic, think again.

Have you smelt a pooey disposable nappy? It REALLY stinks!

Cloth nappies may still smell (face it, it's never fragrant at any age!) but there is none of that chemical-infused smell to add on to it.

As disposable nappies are single-use only, some babies have their nappies on for hours and hours to save money. This can't be hygienic!

Cloth nappies are laundered regularly and cleaner than a used disposable sitting in a household waste bin for up to a week.

5. Good for the earth.

Did you Know:

- In Australia, up to 2.2 million disposable nappies are thrown away every day.

- Every single disposable nappy that has ever existed still exists in landfill.

- Washing cloth nappies responsibly* uses 2.3 times less water compared to water used in manufacturing disposable nappies.

(Stats taken from ozclothnappies.org)

* this means no soaking in big buckets of water and using a water efficient washing machine

6. Cuter than disposables.

What could be cuter than a well-made cloth nappy that actually works?

With great prints, fluffy textures and colourful fabric, nappy change time no longer becomes a chore but a delight!
